HOW TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES
New students who have completed the admission application and are planning to obtain a vocational or a GED certificate may be required to take a placement test. The main purpose of testing and orientation is to help students achieve their educational goals. Registration and testing hours are: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
FEES AND CLASSROOMS MATERIALS
All Clerical Business Skills and Word Processing students are charged $10.00 per course to cover classroom supplies and handouts.
Students attending the ESL, ABE and GED classes re charged $5.00 per class for classroom handouts. Text-books must be purchase by the students.
JOB PLACEMENT
Job placement assistance is given to all SER program participants.

Office Skills Training
Prepare yourself for the 21st century by learning valuable office skills that will prepare you for the skills needed for entry level positions and advanced positions in business.
CLERICAL BUSINESS SKILLS AND COMPUTER SKILLS
This course has been designed to give students basic clerical training in current business methods and techniques, enabling them to build the job skills necessary for employment. Typing is required in any job in today’s workforce. Learn how to type correctly and receive certificates for typing speeds of 50 WPM.
College keyboarding and document processing (GDP 10th):
GDP typing program that helps you master the skills of typing. The program is designed to teach, develop and practice, step by step, typing skills. Whether you're a typing expert or just a beginner, the interactive exercises in this Typing program automatically adjust to your skill level. The better you get, the more challenging the Typing exercises become. You can come and go as you please and pick up the Typing lesson where you left off. One should go through lessons in sequence because they rehearse keys already learned as they add new ones. Instructions for hand positioning over keyboard are included in lessons.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate mastery of the keyboard and keyboarding techniques and type a minimum of 35-50 words per minute at 98% accuracy

10 Key Calculator:
Learn how to operate a 10 key calculator - a skill in great demand in today’s workplace.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Operate a ten-key electronic calculator by touch at a minimum of 80 strokes a minute with .33 errors and demonstrate mastery of the computer 10-Key number pad by keying a minimum of 100 AKPM (adjusted keys per minute) with 98% accuracy.
Filing/alphabetizing:
Learn how to organize information and set up a filing system.
After completing this course you will be able to:
Utilize correct spelling, vocabulary, and proofread your own work. Demonstrate basic alphabetizing skills. |

Computer Software Skills
MICROSOFT OFFICE CLASS
This course is designed to provided the students with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, skills necessary for employment in the automated office of today. You will learn how to create documents using Microsoft Word and produce spreadsheets for business using Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Word:
Microsoft Word 2003 is usually the first Microsoft Office application you will learn during your Office Skills Training. Demonstrates the ability to apply typing techniques and proper grammar usage to standard office production work including letters, tables and forms. However, if you have no computer experience at all, you should begin your training with a basic computer skills and windows course which will give you an understanding of the computer operating system and how to create, save and file your documents using Folders.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Create a document, and edit it.
- Use menus and toolbars in Word to accomplish basic tasks from changing document margins to undoing changes.
- Use basic formatting to make text bold or italic.
- Change line spacing, indent paragraphs, and apply basic styles to a document.
- Save and print a finished document.
Microsoft PowerPoint:
PowerPoint 2003 is the presentation graphics software in the Microsoft 2003 Office Suite. It allows you to create dynamic presentations using its easy-to-use, predefined layouts and templates.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Put text and pictures on slides.
- Navigate in the PowerPoint window.
- Apply a design template.
- Arrange slide content by using layouts.
- Print handouts and notes.
- Prepare to give the show.
Microsoft Excel:
Learn about Excel Spreadsheets and how to create them, add and delete columns, create simple formulas, charts and graphs.
Excel 2003 is the spreadsheet software in the Microsoft 2003 Office Suite. It allows you to store, organize, and analyze numerical information.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Create a new workbook.
- Enter text and numbers.
- Edit text and numbers.
- Insert and delete columns and rows.
Windows XP:
Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft. An operating system is the software that makes your computer functional and is responsible for running all the other software. Start learning about Windows XP today. This course provides a basic understanding of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. Topics include the desktop, parts of the window, moving and sizing windows, My Documents and My Computer, files, folders and drives, and using the Help and Support Center.
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Basic understanding of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system.
- Moving and sizing windows.
- Use My Documents and My Computer, files, folders and drives, and using the Help and Support Center
The course is 13 weeks in length. Class Schedule: Monday though Friday,
8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL (English as a Second Language) program at SER offers non-native speakers of English the opportunity to improve their language skills. ESL students enjoy small class sizes and a personalized approach to learning.
Classes are offered at all skill levels from low beginning to more advanced. The average length of time to complete the ESL Program is 9 months. Class schedule: Monday thought Friday,

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program is to provide instruction
in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics to adult learners in order to prepare them for transitioning into the labor market or higher academic or vocational training.
The ABE class is designed to strengthen basic skills in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Vocabulary, Mathematics, English usage and grammar. The course content is equivalent to training received in the first through the eight grade. The class is 13 weeks in length. Class schedule: Monday though Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. |

General Educational Development (GED)
The GED is an exam developed in the United States that is available for all adults who want an equivalent of a high school diploma. It tests general academic skills and core content that are covered in four years of high school. Each year hundreds of thousands of people earn their GED diplomas, which they use to get jobs, earn promotions, or qualify for higher education or training.
The GED class provides an opportunity for pre-testing, individualized instruction, review of identified areas of weaknesses, and post-testing in five content areas:
- Writing
- Science
- Literature

- Mathematics

Included in the GED exam. The GED certificate is the equivalent to the high school diploma. Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on Reading and Math placement test.
